VEEDERSBURG — Mildred C. Smith, 96, a resident of the Waters of Covington, died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006. She formerly lived in Veedersburg. She was born Sept. 6, 1910 in Sheldon, Ill., the daughter of Charles H. and Nettie C. (Widener) Robbins. She married Thomas Gordon Smith Nov. 3, 1928 in Attica. He preceded in death May 19, 1981. She was a homemaker. She worked at Baxter Drug Store and Myers Clothing Store. She enjoyed being around people. She enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables, sewing for the girls and "watered down gravy” to make it go further. She also liked to refinish antiques. She loved to sing. She had said she always wanted to take singing lessons. She would enter talent shows, put on a black face and sing Al Jolson songs. Survivors include: five daughters, Fauneil McLean, Covington, Betty (Gordon) LaBaw and Virginia (Cotton) Miller, both of Veedersburg, Marietta Pyle, Orange City, Fla., and Denise (Robert) Jackson, Davenport, Fla.; a sister, Eileen Tolliver, Arkansas; 12 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, three sisters, and a daughter, Katha Grooms Hoefle. Gravesite services will be at 11:15 a.m. today (Wednesday) in Rockfield Cemetery with Pastor Paul Kent officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. in Dickerson Funeral Home, Veedersburg. – jlr
