Attica Ind April 4 – Mark O. Smith, 65. Well to do farmer and former commissioner of Fountain County died last night at the family home in Shawnee Township after a year’s illness. In 1908 when a candidate for commissioner on the republican ticket he was given the largest majority said ever accorded any candidate in Shawnee. Mr. Smith was born in Berrien County, Michigan. At the age of 19 he came to visit his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Marquess, pioneer settlers of Shawnee Township. They died soon after he came but he remained and spent the rest of his life there. On Feb 11, 1893 he was married to Edna McClean and two children were born to them.  He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America lodge at Rob Roy and of Attica  K of P lodge. Surviving are the widow, a son Ray at home and a daughter, Elizabeth of Attica. - kbz
