Crawfordsville—Mabel B. Smith, 84, 1810 Indianapolis Road, Crawfordsville, died at 9:20 p.m. Friday, April 21, 1989 in Culver Hospital.
She was born Dec. 5, 1904 in Montgomery County, the daughter of Noah A. and Maye L. Groves Bayless. She was married Aug. 4, 1929 at Crawfordsville to Raymond M. Smith, who preceded her in death.
She graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1922 and was also a graduate of Butler University.
She taught 44 years in the Montgomery County school systems, including Waynetown School, prior to retiring. She served as a Pink Lady at Culver Hospital and was named “Woman of the Year.” She was a member of First Christian Church, CWF Circle, Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, International Travel Club, Retired Teachers Association, Sigma Zeta Sorority and Business and Professional Women.
Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Ethel Wilkinson, Crawfordsville; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Louise Bayless, Crawfordsville; two nieces and three nephews. She was also preceded in death by a brother, a sister, a niece and a nephew.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday in Powers Funeral Home, Crawfordsville, with the Rev. Kenneth Thomas officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. – thanks to S
