ATTICA — Lowell R. Smith, 89, formerly of Attica and had been residing in Kentwood, Mich., died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007. He was born Jan. 20, 1918 in Boswell, the son of Clarence and Mamie Sue (Lynch) Smith. He married Ruthella Marie Crigler May 31, 1941 in St. Louis, Mo. She preceded in death Aug. 21, 2003. He was raised in Boswell, graduating from Boswell High School. He attended Greenville College and Indiana State University. He moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1940 and worked for the University of Michigan Hospital. He later worked as a toll test man for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company for 36 years retiring in 1983. In 1985 he moved to Attica and lived until moving back to Michigan in 2006. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corps. serving during World War II. He saw action in the European Theater. At the time of his honorable discharge he obtained the rank of staff sergeant. While living in Ann Arbor, he served as Mission Director for the State of Michigan United Methodist Churches. He was active volunteer for the American Red Cross and was presented the “Grey Lady Award” as the only male recipient for the American Red Cross. He also served as a former Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America. While living in Attica, he was an active member of the Attica First United Methodist Church, where he served on several church committees. He was the financial secretary for the church for many years. He was a member of the Attica-Williamsport Rotary Club, serving as president and treasurer for the club. Survivors include: a daughter, Carol Smith, Kentwood, Mich., a son, Stephen (Sherrin) Smith, Bronson, Fla.; a sister, Evelyn (Frank) Kennedy, Shingle Springs, Calif., special friends, Cheryl Kincade and Clark Dinwiddie, both of Attica; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Duane Smith. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Attica First United Methodist Church with Pastor Ron Mabry officiating. Burial with military services will follow in Boswell Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Attica First United Methodist Church.
