New Castle—Lawrence Wayne Smith, 60, New Castle, died Friday, June 9, 1989 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Indianapolis, following a five-year illness.
He was born March 19, 1929 in Independence, the son of Homer Lawrence and Laura Frances Dill Smith.
He was a graduate of Oxford High School and International Business College in Fort Wayne and attended the Maritime Academy. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He had worked as a division auditor for Shell Oil Co.; owned Castle Oil; worked about 10 years at Chrysler Corporation; had been a manager of Everybody Oil Co, and was a real. Estate agent with Ellis Real estate Agency, all in New Castle.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Castle.
Surviving are his ex-wife, Carolyn Martin Smith, Columbia, S. C.; three daughters, Melinda K. Smith, Poplar Bluff, Mo.; Kimberly D. Smith, Seattle, Wash., and Samantha E. Smith, Columbia, S. C.; two sons, Matthew W., Los Angeles, Calif., and R. Lawrence, New Castle; three brothers, Vernon P., Ellenton, Fla.; Ralph W., Attica, and Raymond C., Merrillville. He was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald.
Memorial services were Sunday at Hostetler Funeral Home, New Castle, with the Rev. Ashland D. Shaw officiating, with cremation following. -s
