John W. Smith, age
43, a resident of Perrysville, died at 2 a.m. (CST) Wednesday, March 3, at the
Veterans Administration Hospital in Danville, Ill., where he had been a patient
four years. Mr. Smith was born in Perrysville April 2, 1921, the son of Frank
Doan and Mary Mitchell Smith. He was married June 3, 1942 to Melba Nearpass,
who survives. He was a member of the EUB Church in Danville, Ill., Unity Lodge
344, F & AM, of Perrysville and the Gao Grotto of Danville. He was a pilot
with the rank of First Lieutenant and served with the 1504 A.A.F. in World War
II in the European Theatre. He was employed 20 years with the Illinois Bell
Telephone Co., prior to his retirement due to ill health. He had served as a
supervisor in Danville and Champaign. Surviving in addition to his wife, are:
three sons, Steven, with the U. S. Navy in Japan; John D. and Kevin, at home;
and three brothers, Clair of Crawfordsville, Joseph and David, both in
Shelbyville, Ind. The body is at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in
Covington where funeral arrangements are incomplete. – jlr
