COL. JOHN T. SMITH, a former well known resident of the community, died at the home of his son, Chas. F. Smith, in this city this (Friday) morning about four o’clock.  Death came very suddenly and the shock to the family was quite severe.  He took very bad sick in the fore part of the night with his heart.  About eleven o’clock a physician was called and rendered every possible aid, but all was hope-less.  He passed away about 4 o’clock without a struggle. Col. Smith was an officer in the Thirty-first Regiment of Indiana Volunteer Infantry in which regiment he served three years and seven months.   He afterwards wrote a history of this regiment and had it published in book form.  C.M. Spencer and Thos. J. Ratcliff were in the same regiment.  Col. Smith was a man about 75 years old and leaves a wife, three daughters , two sons and a number of grandchildren. He and his wife had come from their late home in Bowling Green, Ind., Wednesday morning for a few days visit with their son, Charles.   He seemed in the best of health and was enjoying the visit fine. A short prayer service will be held at the home of his son at 4 o’clock this afternoon afterwhich the remains will be taken to his home on the evening train for burial.  Undertaker Spencer will accompany the body and the funeral will be held at Bowling Green Monday. – s-
