Attica—James G. Smith, 69, formerly of Attica, died at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 1989 at Veterans Administration Hospital, Danville, Ill., following a lengthy illness.
He was born Dec. 15, 1919 in Attica, the son of Everett and Hazel Hedrick Smith. He was married Sept. 5, 1947 in Williamsport to Edith Maxine Tate, who preceded him in death.
He spent most of his life in Attica and had been a patient at the VA Hospital the past three years. He was a graduate of Attica High School. He formerly worked at Harrison Steel Castings Co. and C&D Battery, both of Attica. He served during World War II in the Army and was decorated with Theater Ribbon, W-6 Bronze Stars and Bronze Arrowhead, American Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Ribbon.
He was a former member of the United Brethren Church of Attica and a member of VFW Post 3318, Attica, DAV of Lafayette, American Legion Post 259, Williamsport, and Eagles Lodge 2596 of Attica.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Max (Bonnie) Shoemaker, Newtown, and Mrs. Patricia Matson, Athens, Mich., and a brother, Max, Phoenix, Ariz.
There will be no visitation. Military graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today (Friday) at Riverside Cemetery, Attica, with Maus Funeral Home, Attica, in charge of arrangements. – thanks to s
