James Edward Smith, 74, of Covington, Indiana transcended to his Creator on Saturday March 19, 2015 in Tennessee following an extended battle with leukemia. He was born in Attica, Indiana to Violet Lucille (Lilly) and Roy Kenneth Smith in 1941. Jim attended Williamsport HS and served in the Army from 1960-62. He worked at Teepak for 36 years and retired in 2003. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, cooking, spending time with family and life on the Wabash River. His passion was embracing his Native American heritage with trips, teachings, ceremonies and customs. He became a fire keeper and teacher; his Native American name was Two Bear. Jim leaves behind a daughter, April (Mark) Taylor of Wallace, Indiana; a son, Brian Smith of Attica, Indiana; two grandchildren, Ashley Olson (David) of Sartel, Minnesota and Zachary Taylor Wallace, Indiana; one great grandchild Cheyenne Olson; 3 sisters Joan (Jerry) Jacks and Jane Osborn of Williamsport, Indiana and Gloria Jacks (Jack) of Albuquerque, New Mexico and two brothers, Ken (Marilyn) of Coweta, Oklahoma and Roy Jr (Sonia); many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Additionally, he leaves behind his adopted sister Crystal Hart and a large extended Native American family. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister (Monatoba “Toby”) and a brother (Robert). Jim and his family are deeply grateful to Randy and Diane Slemons, the kids; Rainbow Eagle and Rainbow Snake Woman, friends from Ohio and North Carolina; the VA Hospital and Hospice Care and others who cared for him at the end. At his request, he was cremated and had no formal service. His ashes were scattered during a private ceremony at which Amazing Grace was sung in Choctaw by Rainbow Eagle. Condolences may be sent to individual family members. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
