Ella B. Higgs Smith, daughter of Harry and Viola Cecil Higgs was born June 1, 1892 at Wheeling, West Virginia and departed this life Nov 26, 1955 at home, here in Sterling. She had been ill for about three years.  She was married to Joseph Carey and James York both having preceded her in death. She was later married to Porter Smith who survives. Also surviving are 4 daughters: Mrs. Wallace Shell of Bloomington, Ill; Mrs. Lonnie Sams of Attica, Ind; Mrs. Patrick Walton of Kingman, Ind and Wandalene Smith at home; 3 sons, Wayne Carey, Floyd and Robert York, all of Veedersburg; 1 adopted son, Kenneth at home; 3 stepsons, Dale York of St. Bernice, Ind; Eddie Smith of Covington, Indiana and Joe Bob Smith, Columbus, Ind; 24 grandchildren and 14 stepgrandchildren and a host of friends. She will be greatly missed by all.  A precious one from us is gone, a Voice we loved is still A Place is Vacant in our Home Which never can be filled.

Mrs. Ella B. Smith, 63, died at 7:40 a.m. Saturday Nov 26 at her home after a series of strokes the past 3 years. Mrs. Smith was born June 1, 1892 in Wheeling, West Virginia, the daughter of Harry and Viola Cecil Higgs. She was married to Joseph Carey and James A. York, who preceded her in death and to Porter Smith who survives. Also surviving are three sons: Wayne Carey and Floyd and Robert York, all of Veedersburg; an adopted son, Kenneth Smith of Veedersburg; three stepsons, Eddie Smith of Covington, Joe Smith of Columbus, Indiana and Dale York of St. Bernice; four daughters: Mrs. Wallace Shell of Bloomington; Mrs. Lonnie Sams of Attica; Mrs. Patricia Walton of Cates, Indiana and Florence Smith at home; 38 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Veedersburg Christian Church. Services were held Monday at Sterling Christian Church with Rev. Guy Walters officiating. Burial was at Rosehill Cemetery at Hillsboro and Fishero Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.  - kbz
