Kingman—Elaine Smith, 78, Route 1, Kingman, died at 7:15 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, 1989, in Williamsburg Nursing Home, Crawfordsville, where she had been a patient a few days. She had suffered a stroke five weeks ago.
She was born March 22, 1910, at Crystal Falls, Mich., the daughter of Joseph and Helena Urban Pike. She was married June 29, 1932, to Dr. Byron J. Smith, who survives.
She was a 1927 graduate of Crystal Falls (Mich.) High School and a 1931 graduate of Grant Hospital School of Nursing at Chicago.
She was a member of Hillsboro United Methodist Church, Friendship Garden Club of Fountain County and Jackson Township Home Extension Club. She was a 50-year member of Kingman Order of Eastern Star 204.
She was instrumental in organizing the parent-teacher association at Kingman School and served as its first president. She was a former member of Kingman Women’s Club.
Surviving, besides her husband, are a daughter, Mrs. Bob (Nancy Jean) Stwalley, Crawfordsville; a granddaughter and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Isabel Lind Forsman.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Woodrow Funeral Home, Kingman, with Kenneth Majors officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Covington.
