SMITH, Chester L.

Chester L. Smith, 66, of Hillsboro, died at 9:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, in Home Hospital, Lafayette.  He had been hospitalized since becoming ill Jan. 19.
    He was born Jan. 15, 1919, in Newtown, the son of William J. and Margaret Marr Smith.  He attended schools in Fountain County and was a 1936 graduate of Mellott High School.  He was married Oct. 28, 1944, in Veedersburg, to Alta Simonson, who survives.  He was a lifelong resident of Fountain County.   He was a retired farmer.  He served in the Army during World War II.   He was a member of Scotts Prairie Church, Elks Lodge and Quigle-Palin American Legion Post, and a former member of Fountain County 4-H Council.
    Surviving, besides the wife, are a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Doyne) Carlson, Battle Ground; a son, Curtis L., Route 1, Kingman; three grandsons and a granddaughter.
    Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the Crumley-Williams Funeral Home in Hillsboro.  The Rev. Dick Wright officiated.  Burial was in Union Cemetery at Newtown, with military graveside rites by the Quigle-Palin American Legion Post.  The family requested that memorials be in the form of contributions to the Fountain County 4-H Council. ā€“ thanks to ā€œSā€ for all the great obit work
