ATTICA — Carl K. Smith, 91, 3939 N. 400 E., Attica, died at 8:20 a.m. Thursday, June 29, 2006 in Woodland Manor Nursing Center, Attica, where he had been residing for the past 11 months. He was born Oct. 22, 1914 in Veedersburg, the son of David Kilbert and Iva (Stonebraker) Smith. He married Elsie Jane Rhode Jan. 25, 1936 in Lafayette. She survives. He was raised in Attica and graduated from Attica High School in 1934. He had lived north of Attica, near Winthrop since 1947. He worked as a welder and welding instructor for the Boston Navy Yard from 1940-1946. He then moved to Alaska and worked in civil services for one year. He then moved near Winthrop where he started farming in Warren Township of Warren County. He also worked for C & D Battery in Attica until his retirement. He had formerly served in the National Guard. He was a member of the Attica-Williamsport Presbyterian Church, Eagles Lodge #2596 of Attica and had received the Golden Eagle Award. He was a former member of B.O.E. of Crawfordsville. He loved to fish and dance. Survivors, besides the wife, include: two sons, David L. (Diane) Smith, Tucson, Ariz. and Philip Smith, Elko, Nev.; a daughter, Carole (James) Mayrose, Clay City; a sister, Mary Kay (William) Mitchell, Wingate; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Guy Smith; and a granddaughter. There was no funeral service. Maus Funeral Home, Attica, was in charge of arrangements.
