Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Smail, age 76, a resident of the Covington community 50 years, died in her sleep Sunday morning, June 11, 1961 at her home at 1001 Liberty St. She was found dead in bed by her two sisters, Mrs. Alta Yates and Mrs. Beulah Ellmore, who had stopped to pick her up on their way to church at about 9:30 a. m. Mrs. Smail was born in Jackson County, Ind., Dec. 21, 1884, the daughter of Frederick Abel and Sarah Rebecca Garloch Waggoner. She was married twice, first in 1911 to John Richard Royse, who preceded her in death March 2, 1916. She was married May 10, 1935 to Harry W. Smail, who died March 18, 1958. She was a member of the Seventh Street Church of Christ of this city. She is survived by: one son, Vernon Royse of Bell Gardens, Calif., four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Yates and Mrs. Ellmore, both of Covington; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, one son, Virgil Royse, and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Seventh Street Church of Christ. Victor McCormick, former pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial, with the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in charge, will be in Upper Mound Cemetery, west of Covington.
