Courtland D. Simms, son of Samuel U. Simms Lafayette attorney-at-law, died Tuesday afternoon at 3:10 o'clock in St. Francis Hospital, Blue Island, Ill following an emergency operation for appendicitis performed there last Thursday. The news of his death was a great shock to his relatives and friends in this city.
Born July 25, 1886, at Newtown, Ind, a large part of his life was spent in Lafayette as he resided for years with his uncle, Dan W. Simms, and attended school here. His mother died when he was three years old. A few years later he came to Lafayette. He attended Ford School and Lafayette high school, graduating from the latter insitution and then going to live on his uncle's farm at Shadeland.
Later he attended Valparaiso University and was in the insurance business with his father here for several years. He was married seven years ago to Miss Mayme Hall of West Lafayette and they lived for a time in Chicago. He took a post-graduate course in Valparaiso and was employed as bookkeeper for the American Express Company in Chicago for several years. For two years past he had been employed as accountant for the Buda Motor Company at Harrvey, Ill where he resided with his wife.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and a young man of personal charm and admirable qualities, having a large circle of friends. Ambitious and capable he was destined to win success in the commercial world. The body will be brought here from Blue Island Thursday afternoon and taken to the SU Simms home. Besides the father he leaves two half-brothers, Lloyd and Manford Simms and two half sisters, Mrs, Reba Wright and Mrs. Levita Menthorn.
The funeral will be conducted from the Simms' home, 1308 South Street, Friday morning at 10 o'clock. kbz
