Crawfordsville—Raymond L. “Jim” Simmons, 79, 2201 Country Club Road, Crawfordsville, died at noon Tuesday, March 14, 1989 in Winona Hospital, Indianapolis.
He was born March 10, 1910 in Montgomery County, the son of George and Florence Baker Simmons. He was married May 6, 1950 at Crawfordsville to Sarah “Sally” Murdock, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Montgomery County and at Crawfordsville for 39 years. He had retired in 1973 from I.N.S. McDaniel Trucklines. In 1972 he was named driver of the year for the firm, denoting three million accident-free miles driven.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. During World War II he was in the 20th Bomber Command in China, Burma and India theaters, was a gunner on a B-29 and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct and Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with four battle stars. During the Korean War, he was a crew chief with the 434th Troop Carrier Wing.
He graduated from New Market High School. He was a member of the Crawfordsville American Legion Post 72 and First Christian Church.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Cindy) Walls, Waynetown, and Mitzi Lou Simmons, Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Mrs. Ramona Devitt, Crawfordsville; a cousin raised in his home, James “Slick” Howard Simmons, Crawfordsville, and four grandsons.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today (Friday) at Thomas Funeral Home, Waynetown. Funeral services will be there at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Dorman Winger officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery with military graveside services by American Legion Post 72. – thanks so much to S
