Grange Corner—Claude Simmons, 96, Route 1, Marshall, died Sunday afternoon, May 7, 1989 in the Parke County Nursing Home near Rockville. He had resided there since March 1985.
He was born April 8, 1893 in the Grange Corner community, the son of John and Elva Zackmire Simmons. He was first married in March 1914 to Ethel Myers, who preceded him in death in March 1933. In 1967, he married Iona Alward, who preceded him in death in March 1979.
He retired from farming in the Wallace community in 1967, moving to Grange Corner. He and his wife operated the community store there until he entered the nursing home.
He was a member of Wolf Creek Community Church, south of Wallace, and a former member of its cemetery board.
Surviving are two sons, Carl, Muncie, and Oral, Route 1, Marshall; four stepsons, Clifton Alward, Wallace; Stanton and John Alward, both of Route 1, Kingman, and Leston “Bus” Alward, Attica; two daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Lois) Isaacs and Mrs. Virginia Taylor, both of Crawfordsville; seven grandchildren; five step grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; several step great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce, a brother, a sister, a granddaughter and a great grandson.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Wolf Creek Community Church with the Rev. Lester Niles officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Thomas Funeral Home, Waynetown, was in charge of arrangements.
