The Rev. Guy Walters of Mellott, conducted the funeral service held at the Crumley Funeral Home in Hillsboro Friday afternoon for Allie Simmons, 66, World War I veteran who died at the Veteran’s Hospital in Danville, Ill Wed afternoon Jan 20. Mrs. Lucile Parnell sang, “The Old Rugged Cross,” and “The Blessed Lights of Home,” accompanied by Mrs. Mildred Gray.  Hillsboro Memorial Post American Legion had charge of the graveside service held at the Lutheran cemetery near Wallace. Those serving as pall bearers and flower bearers were: William Carlson, Carl Epperson, Charles C. Cooper and Donald Johns of Hillsboro; Clarence Calder and Foster Watts, of Waynetown. Sam Janeway conducted the graveside service and George Janeway commanded the firing squad composed of Jessie Scott, Ted Hines, Hershel Maudlin of Hillsboro; Jim Fay of Waynetown and Melvin Howard and Herbert Ferguson of Veedersburg.  Charles Humphreys commanded the color guard consisting of Clyde Jeffries and Alfred Burk of Hillsboro; Donald Craig of Veedersburg and Thomas Orrick of Waynetown.  Mr. Simmons was born Jan 10, 1888 at Wallace, the son of George W. and Ellen Dowden Simmons.  He was married April 11, 1938 to Mrs. Flossie Krout at Louisville, Ky.  Surviving with the wife are two sisters, Mrs. Abigail Allen of Wallace; Mrs. Nancy Hughey of Michigan; two brothers, Opher in Iowa and Floyd of Crawfordsville and several stepchildren. – kbz

Allie Simmons, a resident of the Wallace and Hillsboro communities most of his life and a veteran of World War I died Wednesday night at the Veterans hospital in Danville.  Mr. Simmons had been in ill health since World War I. Surviving is the wife, Flossie 2 brothers and 2 sisters. The Hillsboro Legion will have charge of military funeral rites to be held Friday afternoon at the Crumley Funeral home in Hillsboro.  Burial will be at the Lutheran Cemetery at Wallace.  – kbz
