COVINGTON – Martin Alva Simerl, 84, Covington, a former farmer and retired employee of General Motors at Danville, Ill., died Thursday afternoon in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Danville. He had been a resident of Covington since 1933 and prior to that had been a farmer near Greenup, Ill. Mr. Simerl was a member of the Church of God of Covington. He was born near Greenup on March 8, 1892, a son of Luther and Eliza Jane Smith Simerl. He was married at Hazel Dell, Ill., to Bonnie Mae Goodwin Feb. 27, 1913. Surviving are two sons, George and Rex of Covington; a daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Alice) Lutz of Danville; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, five sisters and two brothers. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Deverter Funeral Home with the Rev. Edgar Allen officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Saturday. -– jlr
