Grace Ellen Shumaker, the third of eight children of George and Mary Johnson, was born at Westpoint, Tippecanoe county, Ind., on Dec 26, 1885, and passed away at the Fillebrown Nursing home, Methodist camp, Spring Lake, at 10:15 on Christmas morning, Dec. 25, just one day before her 70th birthday. Mrs. Shumaker grew to young womanhood at the parent's home in Westpoint. She was united in marriage with Ray Shumaker at the nearby city of Attica, Ind., on Sept. 9, 1906. In 1910 the couple came to Iowa and lived for several years in Rembrandt, where their one son, Harold, was born. In 1913 they moved to Spencer. For the past 16 years their home has been continuously in Arnolds Park. Mrs. Shumaker was an active member of the Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge, both of Spencer. About 2 1/2 years ago failing health made it necessary for her to have constant care, so she was taken to the nursing home of Mrs. Maude Fillebrown at the Methodist Camp on the north shore of West Okoboji. During the past fall, her condition became so serious that she could communicate only with her head and take just liquid food. Mrs. Shumaker was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. Surviving are her husband, Ray; her son, Harold; three grandchildren; Carol a student at Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls, and James and Sally, who are at home in Arnolds Park; two sisters and four brothers. Services were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. from the Leyson Funeral Home in Millford by Reverend Ivan M. Maxson; interment was in the Okoboji Cemetery of Arnolds Park.
