SHULTZ, Frances Ann Walden

Mrs. Fannie Shultz died at her home in this city on last Sunday at the advanced age of 89.  Up to four days before her death she was in exceptional health for one her years, being able to attend to her household duties. The breakdown came suddenly, the immediate cause of death being pneumonia.  Frances Ann Walden was born near West Union, Ohio on March 14, 1829. Her father, with five other families came up the Wabash River in a flatboat, the only propelling power being poles and landed in Attica in 1830.  They located near New Richmond where the father died in 1833.  In 1840 the widow married James H. Dazey and moved to the farm now owned by Dr. Rupert.  Later they moved to a house where the Presbyterian Church is located.  Following the death of her mother, Frances, in 1866, moved to the house where she died on East Jackson Street.  On March  4, 1873,, she married John Wilson Campbell Shultz who died Oct 14, 1901.

Mrs. Shultz had been a member of the Presbyterian Church for more than 65 years.  In early life she was interested in temperance work and was  a recognized state leader in the movement.  Many times she represented the state in national meetings of the WCTU and was always active in that great work. She was also deeply interested in fairs and her talent in this line was recognized all over the state.  For 11 consecutive years she had charge of the culinary department at the state fair.  She was a charter member of the GAR Circle and was honored with a life membership in that order.
Mrs. Shultz had no children of her own but was foster mother to Frank Dazey, who she took into her home in his childhood and treated as her own.  The funeral services were held at the residence on Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. WB McMillin.  Preceding the sermon, the flag service was given by the GAR circle. Burial in Riverside Cemetery.

The following out-of-town people attended the funeral; Mrs. Mollie Westfall; Gould Westfall and wife, of New RIchmond; Lloyd Jaynes and wife; Mrs. Earl Cooper and Mrs. Hettie Haas of Rossville, Illinois; John Dazey and wife; Raymond Jaynes and wife and Mrs. Mary Cole of Hoopeston, Illinois; Carrie Kimball and Mrs. Reta Ferguson of West Lebanon; Fred Browning and wife; Mrs. Fred Byers of Lafayette; George Coombs and wife of Springfield, Ohio.

J. Wesley Whickar has been appointed administrator of the Mrs. Fannie Shultz estate.
