SHULER, Samuel R. - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

Samuel R. Shuler, retired undertaker and furniture dealer and one of the best known men of both Montgomery and Fountain Counties, passed away at his home here at 12:30 o'clock this afternoon at the age of 90. Complications and infirmities of old age claimed his life after only a week's illness. Samuel Shuler was born on April 25, 1840 on a farm near Wallace, son of John and Mary Hagge Shuler. On Dec 4, 1862, he was united in marriage to Sarah E. Harlowe, who preceded him in death March 1, 1922. He lived for many years on a farm near Wallace and in 1894, with son, John W. Shuler, at present an undertaker in Waynetown, established a furniture and undertaking business at Wallace. Then in April 1901, Mr. Shuler and his son sold their business in Wallace and bought the furniture and undertaking parlor at Waynetown, which at that time bore the name of Brown & Birdsell. The dead man continued with the firm of SR Shuler & Son until 1923, when he retired to live a quiet life at his home here. He was a member of Baptist Church and an active member of the Masonic Lodge, Waynetown. Besides the son, John, the survivors are one sister, Mrs. Harriet Grimes of Wallace and a grandson, Lacey L. Shuler, a physician at Indianapolis. Funeral services will be at the Christian Church here at 2 Friday afternoon with Rev. John Servies in charge and Rev. CR Brown, pastor of the local Baptist Church assisting. Burial will be at Masonic cemetery here. The body of the stricken man will lie in state at the Christian Church from 1 until 2 o'clock Friday afternoon before the services.
