SHULER, Arthur Merle

-- New Ross, July 15 -- Pfc Arthur Merle Shuler of the 4th Division of the US Marines has been wounded in action on Saipan Island in the Marianas, according to word that has just come to his wife, Mrs. Virginia Thompson Shuler of New Ross.  The extent of Pfc Shuler 's injuries is not yet known.  He is now in a US Naval Hospital somewhere in the South Pacific.  Pfc Shuler had previously participated in the invasions of Roi and Namu Islands in the Marshalls in Feb 1944.  Enlisting in the Marine Corps Dec 7, 1942, he took his basic training at San Diego, Calif and went overseas early in January of this year. Pfc Shul er is a graduate of Sniper & Advance Sniper schools. He is the son of M r. and Mrs. Glenn Shuler of Kingman.

Wallace – Arthur M. Shuler, 53, commercial manage of Indiana Gas Co of Columbus died at 4 a.m. Thursday in his Rt 3, Columbus home.  He had been in failing health for some time.  Born at Wallace, he served in the Marine Corps in World War II and Received the Bronze Star and Presidential Citation.  He was married in 1942 at Crawfordsville to Virginia Thompson and she survives.  Mr. Shuler was a member of Wallace Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis, Murat Shrine, Wallace Order of Eastern Star, Columbus Lions Club and Columbus Chamber of Commerce.  Surviving with the widow are two sons, Arthur M. Shuler II of Jeffersonville and Stuart, Michael Shuler of Columbus; his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Shuler of Kingman and a sister, Helen Duncan of Crawfordsville.   - kbz
