After being seriously ill for a few days, Charles Edward Short, 95, a lifetime resident of Hillsboro and vicinity died at his apartment in the Wayne Hotel in Waynetown Thursday Dec 8 at 12:30 p.m. He and his wife would have celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on Dec 28. Mr. Short was born June 14, 1860 in Richland Township at the family homestead northeast of here, son of James and Amanda Kemp Short. After retiring several years ago he and his wife made their home at the homestead. In recent years they spent the summer months at their country home and the winters at the Small hotel. He was married to Mary Electa Wade Dec 28, 1884 and she survives. Mr. Short was a member of the Old Antioch Church near Hillsboro, Masonic Lodge No 385, Hillsboro; Macabees Lodge. He attended Ladoga Normal School and Wabash College and taught school for six years. He operated a grain elevator in Hillsboro and was a member of the Hillsboro Hardware firm. He organized and was president of the Farmer’s Bank at Hillsboro which later became a part of the Hillsboro State Bank. He also served as trustee of Cain Township. Surviving besides the widow are two sons, Bruce Short of Indianapolis and Frank R. Short of Palmdale, Calif and one daughter Mrs. RS Crispell of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Short, Mr. and Mrs. Frank R. Short and Mrs. Crispell were all present for the funeral service. The funeral was held at the Grenard & Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown at 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Guy Walters of Mellott officiating. Mrs. Carol Myer gave organ selections and also accompanied Mrs. June Janeway of Hillsboro who sang, “Rock of Ages.” The following pall bearers also served as flower bearers: Clarence Short, Raymond Wiggins, Carl Fauth, Russell Coffman, Harold Bantz, Kenneth Sloan and Junior Bantz. Burial was in the Dry Run Cemetery near the Short homestead. – kbz
