Walter F. Short, 83, a retired schoolteacher, died at 1:30 p.m. Monday in his home near Hillsboro. He had been in failing health several years. He was born in the Hillsboro area and was educated at Dry Run, Hillsboro, and Mellott, and was a 1922 graduate of Mellott High School. In 1926 he graduated from Indiana State University. In 1929, he was married to Lena Crumly, who preceded him in death. His second marriage was Aug. 1, 1959, in Kenosha, Wis., to Deloris Hageman, who survives. He began teaching in 1925 in Wingate, the year before he graduated from ISU, and taught in Wallace prior to moving to Kohala, Hawaii. He taught mathematics and science at Kohala High School for 30 years. After returning to Indiana he taught at Coal Creek, Attica and Alamo high schools. In 1960, he retired from teaching and moved to the farm where he was born and reared.
He was a member of Kalchikiola Congregational Church in Kohala and attended the Mellott United Church of Christ. He was also a member of the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge 385, and Indiana and National Retired Teachers Associations. Surviving with the widow are three sons, John P. Short, Orange, Texas; Dr. David G. Short, Hockessin, Del., and Charles B. Short, Kenosha, Wis. And six grandchildren. A daughter, one brother and a sister preceded in death. Memorial service will be announced at a later date.
