James Short was born in Washington County, Indiana Nov 28, 1835 and was the son of Aaron and Elizabeth Short.  A few years later the family came to Fountain Co and settled on the farm which Mr. Short owned and occupied at the time of his death.  Of the family of five children which were raised he was the last to give up life’s battle.  On Oct 2, 1856, he was married to Amanda Kemp. Ten children born into this home; 3 of them dying in infancy; of those who grew to maturity, Frank died in 1897 leaving six still living. They are Mrs. Laura Archer of Mellott; Mrs. Josie Watson of Ludlow, Ill; Charles E of Hillsboro; Alva of Danville, Ill; Reuben of near Wingate and George of Newtown. The mother died in Nov 1899 and Mr. Short was married again in 1904 to Mrs. Mary Short of Fredonia Kan she being a sister of the first wife and the widow of his cousin.  This union was broken by the death of the wife in Aug 1910. Since then Mollie Rush and her children have kept up the home for him.  Mr. Short united with the church at Sulphur Springs in Jan 1866 which church was afterwards merged into the Antioch Church and he was an active member of this church until the time of death.  He served as deacon in the church for a number of years and was a liberal supper in every way.  Mr. Short “stood four square to all the winds that blew.”  He was a man of honor, integrity and of thrift.  More than 30 years ago he built a large dwelling house on one of the highest points on his large farm and for a long way in every direction it cam be seen, and it has always stood as the exponent of hospitality and of friendship. The funeral service were conducted at the late home with Rev HA Davis in charge and the body was laid to rest in the Dry Run cemetery which is on the farm “where he performed such a long term of active and honorable services  ---kbz
