Veedersburg, Indiana -- Rachel A. Shook, 84, died at 5 pm. Wednesday, Dec 31, 1969, at Tall Trees Nursing Home in Covington. Born Feb 6, 1885, she was the daughter of David and Irene Quiggle. She married A.S. Shook who preceded her in death. A resident of Veedersburg most of her life, Mrs. Shook was associated with several business ventures. She operated a newstand, a variety store and following the death of her parents, The Commerical Hotel. She was Veedersburg's first librarian, a charter member of the Business & Professional Women's Club, Theta Nu Chi and Over the Teacup Club. A member of the Osborne Prairie Church, Mrs. Shook was operating rental apartments in Veedersburg at the time of her death. She is survived by a niece, a nephew and several cousins in the Veedersburg area. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Parham-Funeral Home with Rev. ME Reed of Winamac, Ind officiating. Burial in Osborne Prairie Cemetery.

Veedersburg – Mrs. Rachel A (Rae) Shook, 84, Veedersburg died 5 p.m. Dec 31, 1969 at Tall Trees Nursing Home in Covington.  Born Feb 6, 1885 on a farm in the Osborne Prairie Neighborhood, she was the second daughter of David and Irene Quiggle.  She had lived in Veedersburg most of her long and active life.  Associated in a successful business career, she had been owner and operator of a news stand, two different variety stores and following the death of her parents she continued to own and manage the Commercial Hotel.  She was Veedersburg’s first librarian and was always interested in business and civic affairs. She was a charter member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club.  She belonged to Theta Nu Chi and Over the Teacups club and was a member of Osborne Prairie Church near Veedersburg.  She had been in failing health for several months, following a fall and broken hip.  She was a patient at Carle Hospital in Urbana, later being moved to Tall Trees Nursing Home in Covington at her request.  Late in life she married AS Shook, owner of Shook’s Variety Store. Following his death she continued to operate the store. For the past few years Mrs. Shook had live in retirement, managing some rental apartments and enjoying social activities. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Virginia Snyder and a great nephew, Clifford Snyder, Detroit, Mich and several cousins in the Veedersburg area.  Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Parham Funeral Home with Rev. ME Reed, Winamac, a first cousin, officiating.  Burial was in Osborne Prairie Cemetery. – kbz
