Waynetown - Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Fruits have received word of the death of her nephew, Gordon C. Shook, 32 o n Sept 8 in Columbus Veteran Hospital at Seattle, Wash of polio. Prior to her marriage, his mother was Miss Elva McBroom of the Old Antioch neighborhood near Hillsboro. His father preceded him in death. Mr. Shook had an outstanding record of military service. Enlisting in the US Army in 1939, he served until 1945. A staff sergeant, he served as a combat infantryman and squad leader in the campaigns of Tunsia, Algeria-French Morocco; Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno. He earned the Silver Star, distinguished Unit Badge Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct award and Pacific Service Medal. He was born May 14, 1920 at Marshall, Minn gradauted from Mt. Vernon, Wash grade and high school and married Miss Rose Mary Harcourt of Hagerstown, MD July 4, 1945. After leaving the service he settled in Seattle where he was produce manager in a grocery store. Surviving are the widow; a 10-month old daughter, Julie Kay; his mother, Mrs. Elva Shook of Mt. Vernon, Wash and a brother, Kendall of Everett, Wash. Military graveside rites were conducted by the Golden Stars post of the American Legion at IOOF Cemetery at Mt. Vernon, Wash. mother Elva McBroom.
