ATTICA — Russell Shonkwiler Jr., 67, 304 E. New St., Attica, died at 12:18 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. He had been ill for several years and hospitalized one week. He was born Oct. 2, 1932 in Attica, the son of Russell Glen and Elsie Crowder Shonkwiler. He married Patricia Byers May 31, 1959 in Danville, Ill., who survives. He was a life resident of Attica where he attended Attica High School and later took courses at Purdue University He worked as a supervisor of housing at Harrison Steel Castings Company in Attica until his retirement in 1985 due to health reasons. He was a former member of the Attica Moose and a member of the Eagles Lodge #2596 both of Attica. He was an avid I.U. fan and enjoyed fishing. He was also an avid euchre player. Survivors, besides the wife, include: three daughters, Kris (Jack) Sorters, Attica, Janice Sexton and Tammy Sullivan, both of Lafayette; two sons, Richard Shonkwiler, Attica and Rusty Shonkwiler; a step daughter Cindi (Bill) Askren, Attica; two brothers, Billie Shonkwiler, Attica and John Myers, King George, Va.; nine grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a step great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Jane Shonkwiler; two brothers, Jack and Richard Shonkwiler; two sisters, Doris Cooper and Anna Mae Purple, who died Feb. 4. Memorial graveside services and burial will be at noon today (Wednesday) in Riverside Cemetery, Attica, with the Rev Marcos Gilmore officiating. Maus Funeral Home, Attica, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Attica Foundation. – jlr
