Attica—Elsie E. Shonkwiler, 82, Attica, died at 2:20 p.m. Monday, May 29, 1989 at Woodland Manor Nursing Center, Attica. She had been a patient since August 1987 and ill the past two years.
She was born May 21, 1907 in Henning, Ill., the daughter of John and Cleanes Campbell Crowder. She was married Dec. 30, 1922 in Attica to Russell Glen Shonkwiler, who preceded her in death Oct. 2, 1974.
She spent most of her life in Attica. She attended Attica school and formerly worked as a cook at Logan School for several years.
She was a member of the Attica Christian Church, Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Eagles, where she was a charter member, a life member of the Women of the Moose, and a member of the VFW Auxiliary. In 1988, she was crowned Tiffany Queen at Woodland Manor.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Nelson (Doris) Cooper, Attica, and Mrs. John (Anna May) Purple, Williamsport; three sons, Russell Shonkwiler Jr. and Bill Shonkwiler, both of Attica, and John Myers of Virginia; a sister, Jennie Packer, Americus; 25 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two sons and a daughter.
Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday at Maus Funeral Home, Attica, with Eagles memorial services at 8 p.m. and Moose memorial service at 8:15 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Maus Chapel with the Rev. James Boudouris officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Attica.
