Martha Cain Shoemaker was born in Fountain County, Ind, Feb 1, 1849 and died at her home in Centerville Township, June 22, 1902 aged 53 years 4 months 21 days. She was married to JB Shoemaker, Feb 8, 1866. They came to Kansas in 1868 and have resided on their present home farm since 1871. She was the youngest living of 11 children and but two survive her, one sister, Mrs. MB Clark of Bush City and one brother, George Cain of Oklahoma. At the age of 12 she united with the ME Church and has ever been one of its most faithful devoted members. During her late sickness, which lasted several months, she suffered much but she bore it with Christian fortitude and leaves with her family and her many friends a Christian experience and example that will be lasting. She was a devoted, faithful, true wife and companion, one of the noblest and fondest of mothers, and to say that she will be missed in the home and the community would be expressing ourselves too mildly. She will be greatly missed. She was a most excellent neighbor and while her home was her fortress, she always found time to make herself useful and helpful working untiringly, cheerfully, earnestly in the church, Sabbath school, temperance cause and in every good work and did it willingly for the Master’s sake. No sick or needy neighbor ever wanted for care or sympathy if Aunt Mattie Shoemaker knew it. It has been so often remarked that she never failed to perform every known Christian duty. The funeral services were held at the Lincoln Chapel Church Tuesday the 24th inst, conducted by her pastor, Rev. JD Faulk of Kincaid and her remains laid to rest in the Garnett Cemetery. Her husband and two sons have the sympathy of the entire community in the hour of their greatest bereavement. - kbz
