MILDRED ENGLISH,    daughter of William and Abigail English, was born in Randolph County, N.C., May 10, 1835;  departed this life May 15, 1915, aged 80 years and 5 days.

She was married to Robert D. BEST  June 9, 1857.  to this union were born 3 children:  John, who preceded her in death  Jan. 22, 1914,    William, who lives in Missouri,  and Charles at whose home she passed away.

She and her husband were attending Trinity College,  N. C.,  at the time of their marriage.  Her husband was killed in the war of 1863,  leaving her three small children whom she brought to Indiana in 1871,  and in 1882 she was united in marriage with Michael SHOAF,  with whom she lived happily until 1896 when he too passed away, leaving her to struggle with the problem of life.

She was industrious and economical;  had lived in the neighborhood for 20 years, and many can say she was a good, kind neighbor, doing unto others as she wished to be done by,  and like the woman of old  “she hath done what she could.” She held membership in the Friends church at Springfield, N. C.

Short funeral services were held at the home of Charles Best south of town at 3 o’clock last Sunday, conducted by Sarah W. Lindley.   Interment in the cemetery north of town. – thanks to S&E
