PINE VILLAGE Ind. (CNS) – Eugene Raymond Shoaf, 77, of Otterbein Route 2, was found dead in the front yard of his home at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday (May 4, 1976) by a passerby, Paul Erwin of Otterbein. Warren County Coroner Phil Fisher set time of death at about 7:30 a.m. and the cause as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mr. Shoaf had been ill for about a year and a half, according to Fisher. Mr. Shoaf’s daughter and son-in-law resided with him but were at work at the time of his death. Born Sept. 24, 1898, in Warren Township in Warren County, he was the son of John and Emma Watkins Shoaf. He had been a resident of the Otterbein Route 2 home for 44 years. On Jan. 30, 1920, in Indianapolis, he married Constance Irene Talbert, a school teacher, who died in 1972. Mr. Shoaf had been a farmer all his life. He was a member of the Armstrong United Methodist Church at Greenhill, Indiana Farm Bureau and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Arie 347 of Lafayette. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Annabel Selleck of West Lafayette, Mrs. Doris Benson of Williamsport and Mrs. Carol Lemming of Otterbein Route 2; two sons, Max and Paul, both of Lafayette; a sister, Mrs. Tamsey Wagner of Lafayette; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Maxine. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Fisher Funeral Home in Williamsport, with the Rev. Dale Bales officiating. Burial will be in Armstrong Cemetery in Greenhill. Friends will be received at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Thursday. – jlr
