VEEDERSBURG – Robert W. Shipley, 64, of Carlisle, died at 4:45 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Ill., of injuries suffered in a two-car crash at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Indiana 32, known as Steam Corner, about 5½ miles south of Veedersburg. His wife, Dorothy, 62, is listed in serious condition by the hospital. According to the state police report, Shipley died of severe shock as a result of a fractured hip, fractured leg, facial lacerations and head and internal injuries suffered in the crash. His wife suffered a fractured left wrist, fractures of both legs, a fractured pelvis and multiple lacerations. Two other passengers in the car Shipley was driving were treated and released at the hospital. They are William Shipley, 67, a brother, who received chest injuries, and his wife, Estella, 63, who suffered bruises and abrasions. The driver of the other car involved in the crash, John Sachs, 25, of Covington, was treated and released at the hospital for lacerations of the mouth. His wife, Carolyn 24, was reported in fairly good condition at the hospital. She received injuries to her right arm and facial lacerations in the crash. According to the state police report, the Shipley car, which was westbound on Indiana 32, attempted to turn onto U.S. 41, pulling into the path of the Sachs auto which was northbound on 41. The Sachs car struck the Shipley auto broadside on the left side. The accident occurred at 11:35 a.m. Monday. A rural Angola man was killed today as he walked along Steuben County Road 200 North near his home. Sheriff's officers said the victim, Cecil Hilton, 79, Rt. 2, Angola, was killed when struck by a car driven by Mrs. Virginia of rural Fremont. Jerry Howard, 28, Columbus, died in a one car accident about midnight when the car he was driving went off Indiana 9 near Hope and hit a tree. Howard and two passengers were thrown from the vehicle. Norman R. Conover, 42, Columbus was reported in critical condition and Raymond C. Taylor, 4, Franklin, was listed in fair condition. – jlr
