COVINGTON – Joseph C. Shelton, 76, veteran of service with the United States Cavalry during the Philippine Insurrection, died Saturday night at the Veterans’ Hospital in Danville, Ill. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Shelton served with the First U. S. Cavalry from 1901 to 1904 and during World War I he was an army baker overseas. Mr. Shelton was a member of the Crawfordsville chapter of Royal Arch Masons. He was a charter member of the Fountain County’s Old Guard Veterans of the Foreign Wars post in Covington. He held memberships also in the First Church of Christ at Veedersburg; the Veedersburg Masonic Lodge; Danville Valley Scottish Rite Masonry; Troy Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and Wallace Low 12 Club. The widow, one son and two daughters survive together with a brother, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. -– jlr

Joseph Clifford Shelton, 75 member of this community most of his life, having operated a bakery in Veedersburg and Kingman for several years, died at 5:45 p.m. Saturday Feb 18, 1956 in the Veterans Administration Hospital where he had been a patient since Feb 13. Mr. Shelton had been a member of the Covington First Church of Christ more than 50 years and held membership s in Veedersburg Loge 491, F&AM, Crawfordsville, Chapter RAM, Crawfordsville Council R&SM, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Danville Council Troy Chapter 145, OES, the Wallace Low 12 Club and was a charter member of Fountain County, Old Guard Post 2395, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He attended Covington Schools. He served in the First US Cavalry from 1901-1904, participating in the Philippine insurrection and enlisted in 1918 in the Army serving as a baker. He was overseas 15 months and discharged in 1919. Mr. Shelton was born in Covington Nov 19, 1880 son of Calvin and Florence Merryman Shelton. In 1905 he married Catherine Bales of Veedersburg who died March 11, 1951. In 1952, Mr. Shelton married Verna Glascock who survives. Other survivors include three children: Floyd of Wichita Falls, Tex; Mrs. LaVerne Cox of Covington and Mrs. Florence Byerly of Dyer, Ind; 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; a brother, Sam Shelton of Danville and an aunt, Caroline Carr of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph and one brother in infancy. Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home, Covington with Rev. Gerald Durre officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Masonic graveside service was conducted by the Veedersburg Masonic Lodge. – kbz
