John B. Shelby, one of the pioneer settlers of Tippecanoe County died at 1 o'clock Wednesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George M. Martin on Shawnee Avenue. Death was due to a complication of diseases.
Mr. Shelby was born September 23, 1827 in Pickway County, Ohio and was the son of Isaac and Jane Boggs Shelby. He was the eldest of six children, all of whom except the youngest preceded him in death. The family moved from Ohio to Covington, Ind when Mr. Shelby was one year of age and they resided there for eight years, when they moved to the Shelby Grove in Tippecanoe County where the deceased resided for 60 years. On April 23, 1861, Mr. Shelby was united in marriage to Margaret ann Beaver, who died December 5, 1906. Four children were born to the union and but two survive. They are Mrs. Martin at whose home he died and George B. Shelby. He is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Mr. Shelby was a member of the Mintonye ME Church of South Raub and also the Masonic Fraternity at South Raub. He was a man of high character and was honored and respected by scores of friends throughout the county - kbz
