Joseph Augustus Shaw for 70 years a resident of Wabash township died of apoplexy at his home, Nov 7, 1920.  In 1898 (sic – 1848) his parents, Harvey and Rebekah Shaw with a family of 3 children, came from Pennsylvania and located on the farm south of Covington which has ever since been the home of the family. Mr. Shaw was born two years later, Jan 17, 1850 and married Elizabeth Ramser in 1871. They were the parents of four children: John of Indianapolis; Albert of Covington; Stella of Chicago and Emma who died in infancy. He was widely known throughout Fountain County through his work as a thresherman having operated the first steam thresher in the southern part of the county in 1879. He continued in this work until failing health prevented. One of the original trustees of the Wabash Chapel United Brethren Church, he remained an active member through life and was in attendance at the Sunday evening service when attacked by the disease which resulted in his death one week later. He was a charter member of Walnut Camp No 15 WOW and member of Tidal Lodge 36 K of P. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. JA carter at Wabash Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, burial following in Mt. Hope cemetery. JA Shaw was one of the substantial citizens of the county, being foremost in all its enterprises and always stood for the best things of church and state and his presence and counsel will be greatly missed by every good citizen of his state and community. - kbz
