Arthur Richard “Gabby” Shaw, 73, of Attica, died Friday, June 16, 2000 in a drowning accident in Rioux Bay, Lake of the Woods, near Kenora, Ontario, Canada. Born on March 2, 1927 in Lafayette, he was a Shadeland High School graduate. He had resided in West Point until moving to Attica in March. He was a retired city mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Service in Lafayette, previously working in heat treatment at Fairfield Manufacturing Co. On June 26, 1949, he married Nellie Munson in Lafayette. She preceded him in death on September 5, 1983. On April 27, 1984, he married Janice Furr Maxwell. She survives. Mr. Shaw was a member of Stidham Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and had served as treasurer. He had participated in various sports, including league bowling until a year ago, softball until age 65, church league baseball, hunting and fishing. Also surviving, are: two sons, David (Nancy) Shaw and Ron (Susan) Shaw, both of West Point; a daughter, Joan (Rich) Broaddus of Saybrook, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Janet (Chuck) Yoeman of Crawfordsville and Taffie (Brian) Furr of Kingman; and 16 grandchildren. Visitation 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Hippensteel Funeral Home Service there at 10 a.m. Friday with Rev. Catherine Moran officiating. Interment to follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Stidham Memorial Presbyterian Church of West Point Lions Club. – jlr

He was born March 2, 1927 in Lafayette, the son of Fred and Florence Grenat Shaw. He first married Nellie Munson June 26, 1949 in Lafayette. She preceded in death Sept 5, 1983. He later married Janice Furr on April 27, 1984. She survives. He retired from the United States Postal Service as a city mail carrier in Lafayette prior to that he had worked at Fairfield in heat treating. He was a member of the Stitham Memorial Presbyterian Church, he was an elder and had served as church treasurer, he had bowled in a league until a year ago had played league softball until he was 663 had played intermural church league basketball and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include two sons, David (Nancy) Shaw and Ron (Susan) Shaw both of West Point; a daughter, Joan (Rich) Yeoman, Crawfordsville and Taffie (Brian) Furr, Kingman and 16 grandchildren. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday in Hippensteel Funeral Home, Lafayette with Rev. Catherine Moral officiating. Burial was in Rest Haven Memorial Park.
