Leo Shapiro, whose musical career began in the days of vaudeville when he led an all-girl band and orchestra and continued until his final illness died Sunday Jan 6, 1974 at 5:20 a.m. at Lake View Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for two months. Mr. Shapiro, 68 of 1003 N. Vermillion played the violin, piano and organ during his career. He was VP of the American Federation of Musicians Local 90. He was also a member of Olive Branch Masonic Lodge 38 and the Kiwanis Club. He had been awarded a gold medallion in 1972 in recognition of having contributed more than 15,000 hours of volunteer service to the Danville VA Hospital through the Red Cross volunteers over a span of 30 years. His hobby was golf. He was born Feb 27, 1905, in Chicago, the son of Samuel and Lena Shapiro Shapiro. He married Rona Pauline Hancock in May 1928. She survives. Also surviving is a son, Richard E of Greenwood, Ind; a daughter, Mrs. Stephen (Shirlee) Lockwood of Des Plaines; 7 grandchildren and a great grandchild; several brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Pape Memorial Home. VA Chaplain Milton Popp will officiate and burial will be in Osborn Prairie Cemetery at Veedersburg, Ind. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 Tuesday at the funeral home. The family has requested that memorials be in the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.
