A rural Veedersburg man died Saturday night from injuries he suffered when his car crashed head on into a tree.
Doctors at Burnham City Hospital in Champaign pronounced Arthur H. See, 31, dead at 10:54 p.m., about two hours after he was transferred from St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville.
Hospital spokesmen said See had massive head, chest and pelvic injuries plus a fractured right leg.
The mishap occurred about 6 p.m. on U. W. 136, two tenths of a mile east of the Interstate 74 overpass, Indiana State Police said. See was the only occupant of the car, police said.
Witnesses told police that See’s car was traveling eastbound in an erratic manner at a high rate of speed when it passed another eastbound car.
As See’s auto returned to the eastbound lane, it continued into the ditch on the right side of the road and struck a tree, police said. The car’s engine ignited, by passersby were able to subdue the flames by throwing dirt on them. The Veedersburg Fire Department was called to the accident site.
Police said they don’t believe the fire spread to the passenger compartment, so it probably didn’t contribute to See’s injuries. See was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital by a Fountain County ambulance.
Police are continuing their investigation.
