ATTICA — Ruth L. (Held) Scribner, 90, formerly of 500 E. Main St., Attica, and had been residing in Woodland Manor Nursing Center Attica, died there at 4:05 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2001. She was born Nov. 29, 1910 in Williamsport, the daughter of Edward and Ada Compton Held. She married Robert William Scribner March 10, 1937 in Williamsport. He preceded in death Nov. 15, 1973. She was raised in Williamsport, graduating from Williamsport High School. She received her teaching degree from Butler University. She lived in Attica from the 1930s until moving in with her daughter in Veedersburg in 1998. She had been a resident of Woodland Manor for one year. In her early years, she taught school. She later worked for Gosnell's Clothing Store in Attica. She was a member of the Attica-Williamsport Presbyterian Church, a 50-year member of Fern Chapter #194 O.E.S. of Hillsboro, and a member of Daughters of American Revolution. She was an avid bridge player and had played many bridge tournaments. Survivors include: a daughter, Mary Ruth Phelps, Veedersburg; a granddaughter, Tracy Devers, Veedersburg; and two great-granddaughters, Brittany and Maria Devers. She was preceded in death by a son, James Edward Scribner Jan. 16, 1966 along with two brothers, Phillip and Henry Held. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday in Maus Funeral Home, Attica, with Pastor John DeSanto officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery. – jlr
