Battle Ground—James E. Scowden, 80, formerly of Battle Ground, died at 4:03 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 1989, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. He had been living with his daughter, Mrs. Steven (Susan) Snyder of Brookston, since April.
He was born Aug. 17, 1908, in Tippecanoe County. He was a retired farmer and also did custodial work in the physical plant at Purdue University until retiring from there in 1973.
He was married June 5, 1928, in Colburn, to Louisa Killian, who survives.
He was a member of Battle Ground Masonic Lodge F&AM 313 and IOOF Lodge 5 of Lafayette. He received his 50-year pin from the Masons and his 45-year pin from the Odd Fellows.
Surviving, besides his wife and daughter, Mrs. Snyder, are another daughter, Mrs. Robert (Naomi) McKim, Sarasota, Fla.; three sons, Francis, Buck Creek; Charles, Battle Ground, and Jesse, Lafayette; one brother, Virgil, Williamsport; 24 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. He was preceded in death by four brothers, two grandsons, one great grandson and three daughters, Rosiland, Edna, and Mary Janet.
Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today (Friday) at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Masonic service at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Hartzler Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Brown officiating. Burial will be in Pretty Prairie Cemetery.
