PORTLAND ARCH — Charles A. “Bud” Santmyre Jr., 73, Portland Arch, died at 11:14 p.m. Friday, June 25, 1999 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette, following surgery earlier in the week. Born July 15, 1925 in Rossville, Ill., he was the son of Charles Albert and Florence Lee Ennis Santmyre Sr. He married Margaret Clara Hughes and later married Menefee Shermer Sosby on Jan. 23, 1978 in Carson City, Nev., both preceded him in death. He resided several years in Chicago and lived in Portland Arch since 1967. He attended school in Rossville. He was a self-employed roofing contractor until retiring in 1994. He was a veteran of World War II serving in France and Germany. He attended the Fountain Christian Church in Portland Arch and Wabash Valley Baptist Church in Williamsport. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 3318 of Attica. Survivors include: sons, John Albert Santmyre, Hobart, William Allen Santmyre Sr., Fulton, Ky., daughters, Janice Maxine Disser, Mexico, Mo., Susan Marie Jones, Lake Station, Connie Belle Justice, Wayne W.V.; daughter Susan Zamora, Chicago, Ill.; sister, Lotta Belle Casner, Portland Arch; 20 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Connie Kirts and Viola Maxine Santmyre. Friends may call at Maus Funeral Home, Attica, from noon until service time at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday), with the Rev. David Adams officiating. Military rites will be at the funeral home at the conclusion of the funeral services by V.F.W. Post 3318. Memorials contributions can be made to the Fountain Christian Church. – jlr

Charles Albert Santmyre, age 72, a resident of the Portland Arch community since 1949, died unexpectedly at 2:15 p.m. Saturday April 8 while working in the yard at his home. The Covington Rescue Squad was called but Mr. Santmyre was deal on their arrival. They did administer resuscitation and oxygen but were unable to revive him.  Mr. Santmyre was born in Rossville, Ill Dec 6, 1894 the son of Truman and Martha Bivans Santmyre.  He was married Oct 10, 1916 to Florence Ennis who survives.  He attended schools in Rossville, Danville and St. Elmo, Ill.  He was a retired car repairman for the EJ&E Railroad in Whiting, Ind retiring in 1960.  Surviving in addition to the wife are two daughters, Mrs. Lotta Belle Casner of Covington Rt 3 and Mrs. Connie Kirts of Attica, Rt 4; one son CA (BudY) Santmyre Jr of Chicago, Ill; 14 grandchildren; four great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Martha Barnett of Kankakee, Ill. He was preceded in death by one daughter, one brother and four sisters.  Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.  The Rev. Glenn Ray pastor of the First Baptist Church of Covington officiated.  Burial was in Rossville Cemetery at Rossville, Ill.
