COVINGTON — Hershel Edwin Sams, 73, Covington, died at 2:35 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002 in St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital. He was born Dec. 2, 1928 in Veedersburg, the son of Alva Ray and Elsie Madeline Sigler Sams. He was reared by his mother and step father Donald Hall. He married Jenny Ruth Smith April 9, 1949 in Creve Coeur, Ill. She preceded in death Nov. 13, 1986. He married Betty Jean Noble Stonebraker March 3, 1989 in Springville, Tenn. She survives. He attended Rabb School and Perrysville High School. He was a life resident of Fountain County, residing in Wabash Township and Covington. A millwright and welder he worked construction, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Covington. Survivors, besides the wife, include: his mother, Madeline Hall, Covington; five sons, Robert A. Peggy) Sams, Covington; twins, Donald (Linda) Hall, Georgetown, Ill. and Ronald (Rita) Sams, Covington, Hershel Wayne Hall, Kingman and Keith Leroy Hall, Perrysville; a daughter, Shelley (Scott) Badger, Cayuga; a step son, Darrell (Emma) Stonebraker, Covington; a step daughter, Tonya (Ricardo) Hernandez, Attica; a half sister, Wilma (Larry) Straughn, Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his father and step father. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, with Randy Walters and Bruce Thornsbrough officiating. Burial was in Lower Mound Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the National Kidney Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice. – jlr
