FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP)--Gene W. Ryan, 62, the first Indiana narcotics inspector, died Saturday night. He was hospitalized here Jan. 22 after a heart attack. Ryan was a state police detective during the John Dillinger era, and was named to head the new Indiana State Narcotics Bureau in 1939. He was active in the investigation of the Dillinger gang, and also handled the annual detail at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway while with the state police department. A native of Covington, Ind., Ryan moved to Florida in 1944 because of ill health. For the past 12 years, he was a member of the Hollywood, Fla., police department. --typed by Walt W
