Covington, Ind. (CNS) -- John Earl Romine, 81, a life resident of the Covington area, died at 5:10 a.m. today (Aug. 23, 1967) in the Danville Care Nursing Home where he had been a patient four days. He had been in ill healh two months. Born April 12, 1886, in Warren County, he was a son of Isaac F. and Mary Elizabeth Watkins Romine. He was married June 19, 1919, to Margaret Douglass who preceded him in death March 7, 1957. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mary Katherine Patterson and Mrs. Dorothy Ellen Smith, both of Indianapolis; a brother, Guy D. Romine of Scottsbluff, Neb.; three sisters, Mrs. Jessie Bodine of Robinson, Ill., Mrs. Frances Wright of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Julia Van Deventer of Philadelphia, Pa., and five grandchildren. He was a retired agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. Mr. Romine was a member of the Covington First Methodist Church, the Fountain County Historical Society, the Clarence A. Cook Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution of Indianapolis and the Sons of Indiana Pioneers. Services will be at 11 a.m Saturday at the Covington First Methodist Church with the Rev. P. J. Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends will be received at the family residence at 708 Liberty, Covington, after 2 p.m. Thursday. Covington residents last week mourned the passing of John Earl Romine, a life-long resident of Fountain and Warren Counties, who died Wednesday, August 23, in Danville, Ill. He was 81 years old. Mr. Romine was born April 12, 1886 in Warren County. His parents were Isaac Forman and Mary Elizabeth Romine. On June 19, 1919, he was married the former Margaret Douglass, who preceded him in death on March 7, 1957. During his lifetime of service to the community, Mr. Romine had taught school, helped raise a family of 13 brothers and sisters, been a banker, served as an officer in the Douglass Nelson Abstract Co., and for the last 40 years, had been an agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. In recognition of his many years of dedicated service to the life insurance profession, Northwestern Mutual recently named him Agent Emeritus. Mr. Romine had also been an active member of the Covington Methodist Church, the Fountain County Historical Society and the Clarence Cook Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. He was a devoted husband and father, a loyal friend, and a dedicated citizen. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Katherine Patterson and Mrs. Dorothy Ellen Smith, of Indianapolis; one brother, Guy Romine of Chadron, Nebr.; three sisters, Mrs. Jessie Bodine of Robinson, Ill., Mrs. Frances Wright of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Julia VanDeventer of Philadelphia, Pa.; five grandchildren, Arthur Edgar Patterson II, John Earl Patterson, William Fletcher Patterson Jr., Douglass Channing Smith and Stuart Romine Smith; and a brother-in-law, Mr. Cleland G. Douglass of Baltimore Hills, Warren County. Funeral services for Mr. Romine were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday August 26, at the Covington Methodist Church, with burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home of Covington was in charge of arrangements. – jlr
