COVINGTON — Viola Roman, 83, a life resident of Stringtown, died at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001 in St. Vincents Williamsport Hospital. She was born June 9, 1918 in Stringtown, the daughter of Walter Marvin and Eliza Woods Crowder. She married Charles Roman, Jr., Oct. 7, 1933. He preceded in death Aug. 26, 1963. She was a housekeeper for many people in the area for many years. She enjoyed working in her yard, growing African violets, crafts and refinishing furniture. Survivors include: a daughter, Norman (Bill) VanVactor, Covington; two sisters, Laura Jane (Melvin) Morlan, Marshfield and Barbara Sue (J. D.) Holliman, Quitman, Ark.; a brother, Wayne Crowder, Covington; three grandchildren, J. C. VanVactor, Covington, Eric (Penny) VanVactor, Williamsport and Monica (James) Coffing, Covington; and three great-grandchildren, Rhett and Audrey VanVactor and A. J. Wilson. She was also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. Memorial services were at 7 p.m. Friday in Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, with Paul Kent officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association with envelopes available at the funeral home. – jlr
