Mary Magdalene Keller was born in Fountain County Oct 9, 1836. She united with the Newlight Church in early womanhood and was ever afterwards a consistent Christian woman. She was married to Lewis Rogers on the 8th day of June 1856, and died from the effects of the grip at her home near Wallace Feb 26, 1901. Mrs. Rogers was one of those plain, kind, unassuming women who had no higher aspirations than her family cares. She loved her husband and children with that leader affection born only of a true mother. No work was too hard for her to do, no sacrifice too great for her to make that would add to their comfort to make them happier, and certainly no one reaches a higher sphere than such characters as she. The devotion of this aged pair was often spoken of where one was you would almost always see the other. Especially was this so as the infirmities of age crept upon them. Their marriage was one born of heaven; they were not simply united by the laws of the land. She was the mother of 13 children and leaves behind to mourn her death besides her husband and aged mother, the following ones: Mrs. Tate Wilkinson; Mrs. Mart Wilkinson; Jack; Alfred; Will and George of Fountain County; Mrs. Lester Hall and Mrs. George Turbitt of Peoria, Ill; Mrs. Leonard Sharp of this city and John yet at home. Three preceded her to the spirit world. Henry died in infancy. Philip met a tragic death by the falling of a tree and Mrs. Lee Reichard died a few years ago. The funeral occurred at home on Saturday morning. She was laid to rest by the side of her children in the Zachmire grave yard, the sons-in-law acting as pall bearers.
Our hearts beat so sadly since that fatal day,
The star of our circle pass gently away;
All things seem so dark to us, there’s no dawn
For we are so lonely since mother is gone.
The dear little birds that she loved so well
And her flowers too this sad tale their tell;
Our chair to the table in silence is drawn
For we are so lonely since mother is gone.
Dear brother and sisters, mother’s words lets recall
And turn to dear father for he’s saddest of all;
Let us speak to him gently and for that World prepare
Where we’ll know us more sorrow for mother is there…MSE
