Veedersburg - Hiram A. Roberts, son of Lewis and Mary M. Roberts, was born in Bartholemew county, Indiana, on January 15, 1858, and died at his home on South Mill street in Veedersburg, at 11:45 a.m. November 23 1940, aged 82 years, 10 months and 8 days. He came to Fountain county in the spring of 1872 and was united in marriage to Mary M. Krout on January 8 1878. To them eight children were born. One died in infancy and one son, Glen C. died when he was three years and eight months old. The surviving children are: Mrs. Iva Bowerman of Alamo; Mrs. Retta McKee of near Waynetown; Mrs. Agnes Van Dorn, Alonzo, Alvah and Elmer Roberts, all residents of Veedersburg. On June 7 1922 Mr. Roberts was married to Ada G. Dodson, who survives him. Besides the six children of the former marriage, there are three step children, Mrs. Edith Howerton of Mt. Carmel, Ill.; Mrs. Ethel Minick of Williamsport and Emmett Dodson of Veedersburg; also twelve grandchildren, five step grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Mr. Roberts is the last of twelve children. A sister Mrs. Elmira Peek died about 22 years ago. His brother, Mack Roberts preceded him in death January 17 1936. Mr. Roberts was engaged in the grocery and jewelry business at Wallace four years. During the month of November 1888 he located in Veedersburg, where he conducted a jewelry and optical business for more than fifty years. His son, Alonzo, has been associated with him for 35 years. He was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias and Uniform Rank and also the Modern Woodmen for several years. during the Honeywell revival he confessed Christ and united with the United Brethren church of Veedersburg, where funeral services were held Monday afternoon, November 25 at 2 o'clock, with Rev. Charles E. Howard and Rev. Flossie Farley in charge. Interment was made in the Rockfield cemetery. --(thanks to Betty D)
