An 18-year-old Attica man died in a fire in his apartment early Sunday morning, September 12. Dead is Pete Brian Renick. Fountain County Coroner Robert Maus said he died of asphyxiation following the fire in his apartment at 401 South Brady, Attica.
The fire was discovered by a neighbor shortly after 3 a.m. Firemen at first were told the apartment was vacant and did not find the body after the fire was put out. Around 7:30 a.m. a caller to the fire department reported smelling fresh smoke, and when he looked into the apartment he saw Renick’s body.

Renick was found lying in a secluded area of the apartment’s kitchen, down a long hall separating the kitchen area from a bedroom and living room.

Cause of the fire is unknown but authorities are still investigating. The fire damage was contained to Renick’s apartment, which filled it with heavy smoke. Other apartments sustained smoke and water damage.

Renick reportedly shared the apartment with Gerald Simpson, who was not home at the time of the fire.

Services for Renick were held Wednesday at Maus Funeral Home. Rev. James Boudouris officiated and burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

A former RR 4, Veedersburg resident, Renick had resided most of his life in the Attica-Veedersburg area. He attended Attica and Fountain Central high schools and was a hand grinder at Harrison Steel Casting Company in Attica.    He was born November 8, 1962, the son of Larry and Paulette Holycross Renick. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Roy Neermann of RR 4, Veedersburg; his father of Danville, Illinois; two brothers, Larry of Danville and Dick of Veedersburg; three sisters, Mrs. Billy Joe (Cheryl) Lowe of Veedersburg, Debbie and Pam Renick, both of RR 4, Veedersburg; maternal grandparents, Harold “Pete” and Betty Holycross of RR 1, Attica, and William and Glenna Christenberry of RR 4, Attica; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Marie Renick of RR 4, Attica. – thanks to S
